Project Overview: 

The Cabinet office runs a series of development programmes aimed at developing the leadership capability of those Civil Servants who have been specially selected for their potential and are likely to be promoted into the Senior Civil Service.

The "Preparing for Top Management Programme" uses a mix of formal classroom work, supported by Executive Coaching; action learning; and visits to other organisations. 

The commission was to:

  • Provide both support and challenge to a range of individual leaders undergoing a high profile senior leader development programme in order that their development journey will be more effective
  • Ensure the paying client is getting maximum value from the development programme itself
  • Help the individual become a more advanced learner by taking them around the learning cycle systematically
  • Ensure that any issues or problems that arise on the programme are dealt with and/or are fed back to the Centre of Government so that improvements or change can be implemented (whilst maintaining client confidentiality)

Project Outcomes/Impact:

  1. Individual managers have provided positive feedback both verbally and in writing e.g. "The support I have received has challenged my thinking at a deep and profound level. My staff have noticed the difference in how I relate to them and I know I am more effective now as a leader ".
  2. Seven leaders who were coached on this programme have been promoted into the senior civil service and each has thanked Sue for the part she played in their development and for making a difference for them.
  3. The programme has been independently evaluated and the coaching was  found to be the part of the process with most impact.
  4. Sue has been asked to do follow up work by a number of participants in this programme for both individual and team development using psychological tools and Belbin roles.
