Project Overview:

The Robert Owen Society is a Family of Co-operative and Social Enterprise organisations - they describe themselves as third sector and . As an organisation they work within the areas of education, training and regeneration.  Their main area of business activity is initial teacher education, and they also run other training courses, regeneration projects and initiatives.  The Robert Owen Society was formed in 2001. It was initially called Marches Interactive Services and Training (MIST) and was set up as a subsidiary company of the Marches Consortium. In 2003 MIST changed its name to the Robert Owen Society for Learning and Social Economic Development.  The Society no provides a range of community and member based services.  

Excellence in Business have worked with the Society over the last 8 years in developing the capacity of their senior team, organisational development, business planning and self-review and analysis.  More specifically we have:

  • Supported the Society and partners across the County in developing Higher Education across the County of Herefordshire and wider Marches Sub-region;
  • Undertaken an annual review of the Society and its services leading to recent restructuring and establishment of the Robert Owen Trust as a registered charity;
  • Developed the Society's business plan and supporting performance management framework;
  • Mentoring support to the previous Chief Executive and performance management of the Chief Officers;
  • Supporting the selection panel for the appointment of the new Chief Executive;

Project outcomes/impact:

  1. The Society now have the highest number of post graduate HE places in the County;
  2. Agreed template in place to support the establishment of a local HE institution for the sub-region under the Government's University Challenge;
  3. The Society remain one of the largest independent Initial Teacher Education providers in the Country with an excellent partnership in place with Birmingham City University;
  4. The most recent reorganisation was unanimously accepted by staff and their representative body NACO and all are clear on the future direction of the Society.
  5. A framework is now in place for our lead consultant to provider an ongoing performance management and mentoring role to the Chief Executive and President for the next three years on behalf of the chair of trustees.
