Course Aims:

This practical and interactive 2-day programme provides a foundation in the basic elements of employment law. It enables participants to handle the common employment issues that arise on a day-to-day basis, in a positive and professional manner.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the workshop, delegates will have the knowledge to: 

  • Understand the legal principles that apply to the relationship between the employer and the employee;
  • Provide and follow basic advice on resolving employment issues, while following best practice in the workplace.

 Areas Covered:

Creating the Employment Relationship

  • The recruitment process, including advertising; application forms; interviews;
  • The contract - offer, terms, clauses;
  • References - what to be aware of;
  • Inductions;
  • Medicals;
  • Employment status/self employed,part time ,fixed term contracts.

 Maintaining the Employment Relationship

  • Implementing good working practices dealing with discrimination issues, including  race/sex discrimination, direct and indirect, victimisation, bullying and harassment; disability discrimination, religion or belief, sexual orientation, age discrimination; and remedies for discrimination
  • Maternity, paternity and adoption rights and parental leave
  • Request for flexible working
  • Work and Families Act 2006
  • Statutory disciplinary and grievance processes
  • A practical approach to difficult issues, including absenteeism; poor performance; email and Internet abuse; misconduct in and outside work; stress; and acting fairly and reasonably

Terminating the Employment Relationship 

  • Wrongful dismissal and unfair dismissal;
  • Resignations and Redundancy.
